Homemade “Everything but the Bagel” Seasoning

Friday, Jul 9, 2021 | Lifestyle

Hi all! Coach Lisa here!

If you’re any type of a foodie (like myself), you’ve heard of an “Everything Bagel”. It’s a tasty New York style bagel that’s simply covered in… well… everything! Usually there’s a salty, peppery, garlicky, sesame-ish kind of taste to it! Over time, this yummy breakfast delicacy has been iterated on and iterated on, and eventually turned into a household name. The most recent byproduct of this has been the marketing of the actual seasoning that lays atop the bagel. Hence the name “everything BUT the bagel”! Today, I’m sharing my equation for creating my own version of this beloved seasoning.

The original version of the infamous Trader Joe’s Everything But the Bagel Seasoning can be found here! As awesome as that is, I really wanted to try my hand at my own version! Classic me, I know. Below you’ll find some ideas, inspirations, additions and subtractions that I’ve either tried or considered for my own version of Everything but the Bagel seasoning! Mix in whatever ratio you like. I can make 2 huge containers for less than 1 bottle from the store.

The original mix:

  • Black Sesame Seeds
  • White Sesame Seeds
  • Poppy Seeds
  • Minced Onion
  • Minced Garlic
  • Coarse Sea Salt / Kosher Salt

I just did a short 3min video here: https://youtu.be/nkfX_4q3nZQ

I make it in bigger batches and often add other things.  My most recent adaptation is this:

  • 1 bag Black Sesame Seeds
  • 1 bag White Sesame Seeds
  • 1 bag Poppy Seeds
  • 1 container Minced Onion
  • 1 container Private Selection 5 Salt / 5 Pepper Seasoning Blend (I like this in place of the Minced Garlic and Sea Salt)

Here is a list of options for you to try! There’s no right or wrong way to do it! These are mere suggestions:

  • 🧂 Salt free?
    • Just leave it out
  • 🌶️ Want a little heat?
    • Add cayenne/chili powder or red pepper flakes…
  • 🌿 Want a little savory?
    • Add caraway, dill, fennel or celery seeds…
  • 🍝  Italian flair?
    • Add Italian Seasoning and Grated Parmesan
  • 🥡 Asian inspired?
    • Make furikake by adding nori (seaweed), sugar (optional bonito flakes) Click HERE to find my favorite furikake concoction!
  • 🌵 Make it Mexican?
    • Add chili pepper, Parmesan cheese, chipotle powder, cumin and dried cilantro…

The possibilities are endless!

In this one I had picked up some Litehouse Guacamole Seasoning (dry herb blend) on sale at Kroger so I put that bottle in as well. Yum! Simply combine in a large bowl and store in the empty spice bottles. You can even freeze it.  I buy my ingredients, especially the Sesame Seeds, from my international/ Asian market for much much cheaper than my supermarket! Hope you enjoy!
