The biggest mistake many people make when trying to reach their goals is setting their sights on their big goal and not taking the time to break it down into smaller, more manageable steps. Let’s call these steps our Milestone Goals.

It’s important to know what your big goals are. We need those, right? We’ve got to know where we’re headed. But, once we have a grasp on what those big goals are, we need to take it a step further and break them down into bite size pieces.

Setting smaller, “Milestone Goals” will help minimize procrastination because the tasks you need to take to accomplish them are usually less overwhelming than when you’re looking at your big overall goal. What does less procrastination mean? More productivity. And more productivity means reaching your bigger goals faster.

We want to set these Milestone Goals along the way to give ourselves victories to celebrate. Celebrating is important. We have to be able to give ourselves credit for what we’ve accomplished. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t made it all the way to your big goal yet. Look what you’ve done so far! Look at these milestones you’ve reached! They are significant! They deserve to be celebrated!

It can happen to even the most determined of us when we’re working tirelessly toward reaching our goals. Let’s face it, sometimes it can take years to accomplish our biggest goals. It’s tough to keep up the same momentum a year into things as we had when we first began, but it’s not impossible.

Set yourself up for success by breaking down your overall goal into as many smaller goals as you need to. Maybe that means you’re setting goals you can reach every month, or every 6 weeks. It’s totally up to you. Find what works to keep yourself motivated and make it happen. And don’t you dare skip your celebrations! Change it up every time you reach one of your milestone finish lines and treat yourself.
