What’s in your Closet? Feeling Good About your Clothes

As the weather gets warmer and spring approaches, many of us feel stressed as we go through our closets. For me, living on the east coast means a change of clothes as the seasons change. It’s common for those who struggle with weight loss to have a variety of sizes in their closets. However, holding onto clothes that don’t fit can be overwhelming, and we may forget about certain items we own.

Instead of holding onto clothes that don’t fit, it’s essential to do a clothes “purge” at the beginning of each season. Here are some tips to get started:

  1. Set aside a time to go through your closet
  2. Make piles for items to donate, keep, tailor, garbage, or sell
  3. Try on clothes that you’re unsure about, and get rid of anything that doesn’t fit or is uncomfortable
  4. Don’t hide in baggy clothes. Take pride in your appearance no matter what size you are
  5. Once you’ve gone through your closet, it’s time to go shopping!

Clothes shopping after weight loss can be fun, but it can also bring anxiety. It’s important to wear clothes that fit properly to feel good in our bodies. Keep up with your overall appearance, including your undergarments. Consider saving money for a new wardrobe each time you lose a pound.

When you’re ready to go shopping:

  • Bring a friend for a second opinion
  • Take several sizes into the dressing room.
  • Look at accessories to enhance your outfits and accentuate your best features.
  • Don’t buy clothes that you hope you will fit into,
  • If you see something you are not ready to buy, take a picture and use it for inspiration
  • and, don’t be afraid to add some color.

Remember, taking pride in the way we dress and groom can lead to feeling better about ourselves. Similar to the gold-star philosophy, you worked hard, you deserve to reward yourself. Success comes with enjoying life and feeling confident in how you dress and feel.
