Whether you’re close to reaching your goals or just starting, July 4th celebrations can make us anxious about how to handle the abundance of food and treats typically found at these gatherings. No one can claim it’s easy to attend these events without feeling stressed or tempted, but it is possible. We need to take control as much as we can and plan ahead.

With summer in full swing, markets are already brimming with melons, plums, peaches, and watermelons. On a hot day, nothing beats a refreshing fruit platter. Social media is full of ideas for turning vegetable and fruit assortments into beautifully arranged platters. Explore ways to lighten up your favorite dishes. If you’re hosting the event, you have the greatest control. You can create a healthy environment for yourself and your guests by making a few substitutions that no one will even notice. If you’d like to have a cocktail, add some seltzer, fruit, and ice to dilute it. Many juices and mixes are now available in sugar-free varieties. Morningstar offers delicious veggie hot dogs, and Boca or veggie burgers are also excellent alternatives. However, desserts are what everyone remembers. If you’re going out, offer to bring the dessert.

Here are some healthier versions of desserts:

Fourth of July Cake:

  • Use sugar-free cake mix or Angel food cake (Vanilla)
  • 1 can of sugar-free 7UP soda
  • Top with Cool Whip or sugar-free vanilla frosting
  • Decorate with blueberries and strawberries to create an American flag
  • Follow the cake mix instructions

Pina Colada Cake:

  • 1 box of Angel food cake
  • 1 can of crushed pineapple
  • 1/4 teaspoon of coconut extract
  • Follow the cake mix instructions

Lemon Pie:

  • 11 oz condensed milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup of lemon juice (you can use sugar-free cranberry juice for a pink color)
  • Pour into a low-fat graham cracker pie crust (or bake it in a Pyrex dish to skip the crust)
  • Top with Cool Whip
  • In a medium bowl, mix the ingredients, then pour into the crust or dish
  • Bake at 350 degrees until a knife comes out smooth
  • Chill for 24 hours, then top with Cool Whip, fruit, or your preferred topping

With some creativity, research, and planning, you can enjoy July 4th without feeling deprived. At the end of the day, a meal or dish does not define you or your ability to enjoy the holiday and the company of those around you. You have the confidence to make a few simple changes that will help you stay focused and guilt-free when making healthier choices overall. This holiday, you have the strength to get through without fearing any slip-ups or the pressure to be perfect. Your determination to plan and make healthier choices will lead to long-term success. Happy July 4th!
